This series appears to start in 1972, basicly too late for Van's book. There is a Merced Lake in San Francisco. A 50 cent One-Day Permit (1980 - see Licenses & Misc section for picture), nicely gives enough information to define the whole series. The stamps are intended to allow fishing on Lake Merced, San Francisco, and a valid California sport fishing license is required. It does not specifically say that the stamp has to be put on the license or signed, but there certainly should be at least one license out there with the stamp on it. The stamps are not particularly rare, but all I have seen have come from remainders.

The Vanderford auction indicates that the series extends to, at least, 1982. A set of 14(?) and a couple of them on license went for $250 - very substantial. On license would be very interesting, but $250 is a lot of money.
